Road Density In India

Road Density: The length of road per 100 sq km of area is known as density of roads. The distribution of road is uneven in the country. Density of all roads varies from only 12.14 km in Jammu and Kashmir to 517.77 km in Kerala (as on 31st March, 2011) with the national average of 142. 68 km (as on 31st March, 2011).

Problems Faced By Road Transportation: Road transportation in India faces a number of problems like

  • many roads being unmetalled, due to which transportation is difficult during  rainy season.
  • inadequate reach of National Highways in many places.
  • high traffic congestion on roads in cities.
  • bridges and culverts (tunnels) connecting roads are old and narrow at many places.
  • According to volume of traffic and passengers, the road network is inadequate. however, the fast development of road network has taken place in different parts of the country.
